Diary of a Sentimental Killer is based on a short novel by Luis Sepùlveda, published in 1996 that sold more than 8 million copies throughout the world. It was never translated into English which makes the number of copies sold even more impressive.
Our protagonist is a Dexter-like protagonist with the charm of Alain Delon’s Samourai : a dandy who does not accept authority of any kind, not even in matters of love. No one is spared from the violence that seeps through the world, but even the most ruthless character in our story is portrayed with a deeply human side, a tenderness that makes them truly iconic. It’s this very struggle between reason and feeling, violence and humour that makes us root for our killer until the very end. When, forced to choose between sentimentality and professionality, he chooses the latter. And finally accepts who he is.
